Why does this ajax action not work with requestScope?

I'm not sure why this doesn't work. Technically the page is not refreshing so I should be able to use request scope right? Thanks.
What may be a little more appropriate is ViewScoped, see an article by Balusc: http://balusc.blogspot.com/2010/06/benefits-and-pitfalls-of-viewscoped.html
RequestScope means the bean is instantiated each time a request is sent to it. That includes an ajax request.
