Not necessarily. I am not completely sure i understand your question, but it sounds like you are storing images on your web server for use in Ebay postings. Certainly you prefer the traffic to go to Ebay, but if you use particularly descriptive titles for your files, Google may end up indexing them and placing them in their image search application. While this could be a negative (such as people hot-linking to your images for their own use), it could also end up directing some traffic to your main website...which depending on what your main website is used for, this could bring in some business, interest, or at least give you an opportunity to direct them to Ebay to purchase your merchandise. Generally it is fine if Google indexes your images unless they contain sensitive info or are copyrighted.

If you wouldn't want them to appear in search results, yes - If they're private, you could consider password protecting them.

It can also be a good thing, and your image appearing in results can drive traffic to a listing (on eBay, if that's what you're doing).

my idea is to make them public so that people can see them in image result, then if you want traffic but don't want hotlinking, write some fancy url rewriting to redirect to your content rather than images. :-)
