Improve this questionI'd like to use the ScrewTurn Wiki
in our company for an intern documentation system. I'm litle bit confused about the licencing.
ScrewTurn Wiki is released under GPL license, which is an open source licence, but they have also a comercial Internal Usage License
.
So should I buy the licence or can I use the open source license in my company ? We won't make any changes, ressel it or anything. We just want to install in on our internall web server and share some content between colleagues.
If you are not planning to distribute it or build products that incorporate it, then your usage does not fail under the GPLv2. You can freely use the software.
Some companies have firm policies that they won't go near any GPL software (out of fear and lack of understanding, generally, or because they are a software house and are applying a blanket software development derived "No GPL code" policy to their IT department), so I suspect the internal use license is offered just for them.
(The license fee is fairly cheap though and also includes email support, so you may want to consider buying it if you can't get the product to work or just feel you should donate something to the project.)
From their website:
ScrewTurn Wiki 3.0 is a wiki engine based on Microsoft ASP.NET 3.5 and released under GPLv2 license, meaning that you can use it for free as long as you fulfill all GPLv2 statements.
Internal Usage License
For clients that cannot or do not want to use software licensed under GPLv2, we offer a commercial license at a reduced price. You can purchase either in Euros or in US Dollars.
YOU decide whether you pay or whether you use it for free.
