iOS App compiled for 4.1 worked as debug and AdHoc and after being released in app store crashes

Here's a strange one....

I have an app which runs rock solid since many years, and recently I did a little add on to it. I testes the app on several devices (iPhone 4, 3GS) and did that in debug an AdHoc installed modes. The app passed Apple's review process flawlessly. But now when people load the update from the app store, the app crashes randomly when pressing buttons. The crashlogs are no good because after symbolcating they show that the crash happend in main:12....

The app has been built for iOS 4.1 since ages, never a problem.

needless to say, that the keys which cause the crash have worked before and have nothing to do with the new functionality I put into the app :-(

EXC_BAD_ACCESS in main. That sounds like you're over-releasing an object somewhere, and when it goes back to the main run loop and the default NSAutoreleasePool drains, it's accessing an already-released object to autorelease it.

An okay way to go about debugging this is to wrap your suspect functions with:

NSAutoreleasePool *pool = [[NSAutoreleasePool alloc] init];
// the rest of the function
[pool release]; // drains the pool automatically
return; // you need to add the above line before each time you would return

Then hopefully you will see the function which over-releases the object. If it's a custom object being released that is causing the crash, it could be that you autorelease a member variable of that object which you didn't retain or alloc yourself. This is also possibly the case for any @property (assign)'s you use, if you ever release them without also having retained them.

wowzers.... I finally found the issue and i can't wait to share.

"Guard Malloc" and "Enable Guard Edges" finally helped me finding the bug. Two Float32 arrays were allocated using calloc, but the index accessing them and writing the Float32s into it was too big by 1 (haven't we heard that before?!?).

After enabling Guard Malloc the debugger stopped right at the source code point where the wrong access has happened, but it wasn't too obvious why. Being bored with calloc (in fact always have been since my early C coding days) I changed the arrays to be NSMUtableArrays and guess what, Guard Malloc again stopped at the same line of code (this time with the NSMutableArray replacing the *Float32 pointers), but because it is Objective-C it also told me that the Index was out of bounds and gave me a stack trace.

The fix of course then was easy by allocating the right sizes for the arrays, however what worries me is that this wrong code was in the App since 2008 and it never caused any problems! Just now that I added something to the App memory must have been shifted to the "dark side".

So.... there you have it, when you get a EXEC_BAD_ACCESS in your main, watch out for calloc / malloc / free and check, double check and recheck your indices.

By the way, in Xcode 4 setting those flags for Guard Malloc, etc. is done through "Edit Scheme"
