What could possibly be wrong here?

Well, the documentation example is wrong. Here's the correct query notation:

        var contact = new ContactManagerDB().Select
            .From<Contact>()
            .Where(ContactsTable.IdColumn).IsEqualTo(key)
            .ExecuteSingle<Contact>();

The discrepancy being the missing parentheses after "ContactManagerDB()".
