What is the purpose of Perforce file ".perforce"?

What is the purpose of Perforce configuration file .perforce? Where may I find a sample file showing its contents?

Git-p4 Usage refers to this file, but I don't have this file in any of my开发者_运维百科 workspaces nor in my home directory and have not seen this file mentioned in any other Perforce documentation. Does it have any purpose outside of the context of git-p4? Does it apply to both Windows and Unix environments?
