php installing folder name problem

i have using XAMPP for a while , but i just want to go through the manual install procedure of LAMP.

but when i try to install the php-5.2.17-Win32-VC6-x86,i find thi开发者_开发百科s wired thing:

i try to install php on D:\Programming\PHP\php-5.2.17-Win32-VC6-x86 but the mysql and mysqli extension won't work. then i rename the folder to D:\Programming\PHP\php, after which it working fine.

does the php folder has to be named "php"?(i also tried other names , they are not working ither.)
